The best way to pick colours that suit you is to establish your complexion’s skin tone or "season". Make-up salespeople are trained to do this but you can decipher yours by examining the inside of your forearm in natural light and looking for golden undertones (autumn, spring) or rose/blue (winter, summer). See our ‘How to dress for your complexion’ for more information.
Winter is a cool tone. Choose a foundation in light pink and beige, or olive beige. Eye makeup is best in rich colours: steel, violet, turquoise and emerald green or icy shades such as silver and sky blue. On the lips, deep red, raspberry and violet look great. Avoid browns, oranges and gold.
Summer is also a cool tone. Choose a foundation in light pink and beige, or olive beige. Eye makeup is best in lavender, powder blue and icy green. Lips look best in raspberry, watermelon and rose pink. Avoid intense, clear colours.
Autumn is a warm tone. Choose a foundation in a warm beige or honey tone. Eye make up looks best in olive, gold, moss green, dark brown and grey, teal blue and dark blue. Lips look good in spicy, earth tones such as peach, coral, burnt red, orange-red. Avoid clear, bright colours and pastels.
Spring is also a warm tone. Choose a foundation in a natural beige shade with subtle golden tones. Eyes look best highlighted with whitened brown, apple green or orange. Lips should be warm red, coral or peach. Avoid pink, raspberry or anything too bold.
