Dancing the Cross Body Lead in Rumba

 
 

Music must be swallowed by movement.

   
The cross body lead in Rumba is just one of many different steps you can do for this dance. It can be danced all by itself as a stand-alone pattern, although it is often used as a lead-in for other steps—hence the name. It starts with a box step, and then the man gets out of the lady’s way and she walks past him. They both turn and end up facing each other again, 180 degrees from where they started.

Man's Steps
  1. Stand on your right foot with your left foot free.
  2. Step forward on your left foot on counts 1 and 2.
  3. Step to the side on your right foot on count 3.
  4. Bring your left foot to your right and change weight to your left foot on count 4.
  5. Lower your left hand to the lady’s waist level and keep it in front of her right hip as you turn 1/8 turn to the left and step back on your right foot—all of this occurs on counts 5 and 6. Do not let the lady turn with you; keep her facing straight forward.
  6. Turn 1/8 turn to the left and step to the side on your left foot on count 7, leading the lady to walk in front of you. You should be facing 90 degrees to the left of where you started.
  7. Bring your right foot to your left and change weight to your right foot on count 8.
  8. Bring your arms, with the lady in them, back to closed dance position while you turn ¼ turn to the left and step forward on your left foot on counts 1 and 2.
  9. Step to the side on your right foot on count 3.
  10. Bring your left foot to your right and change weight to your left foot on count 4. This will be the beginning of the next step as well as the end of this one.


Lady's Steps

  1. Stand on your left foot with your right foot free.
  2. Step back on your right foot on counts 1 and 2.
  3. Step to the side on your left foot on count 3.
  4. Bring your right foot to your left and change weight to your right foot on count 4.
  5. Step forward on your left foot on counts 5 and 6. The man will lower his hand and allow you to move straight forward while he moves out of your way.
  6. Step forward on your right foot on count 7. You will be walking past the man, in front of him.
  7. Step forward on your left foot on count 8.
  8. Turn halfway around to your left and step back on your right foot on counts 1 and 2. The man will lead this turn.
  9. Step to the side on your left foot on count 3.
  10. Bring your right foot to your left and change weight to your right foot.
